Our pre-school room is the last of our 3 rooms that children move through, it is made up of 2 bright and welcoming rooms each designed to fulfil different learning needs. The first room is the carpeted room, here we have set up a spacious role play kitchen, complete with baby care and dressing up clothes, there is an extensive maths area including activities for number recognition, shape sorting and mathematical problems. There are also options for construction in this area. There is a cosy book corner set up for the children with cushions and a large variety of books the children can freely access. In the second room is where all our messy activities take place, there is a large easel, sand and water tray, small world resources and plenty of other sensory equipment such as cornflour and play dough.
Our main focus in Pre-school is to prepare children for their move to school, this means we have more structured group times teaching skills such as phonics and early reading skills. We use the Read Write Ink programme that is used in many schools across Sheffield to help promote early reading skills. Children are invited to join in discussions with the staff linked in with topics being studied and small projects are initiated in this room.
Further independence building is done in pre-school, children are supported and encouraged to serve themselves at lunch and snack times, access toilets independently and take charge of hygiene routines such as washing hands, all of this is still supported based on individual needs.
